Jack Payne.

Columbia were using laminated pressings before 1923. 1923 was the year they introduced 'New Process' records, in which the surface material was very fine, producing quiet surfaces (also helped by over-buffing of the metalwork). But well before 1923, I think...

I've just found the information I'm trying to remember is still online here http://www.shellac.org/wams/wnewproc.html

Lamination ended for Columbia in Britain when they merged with HMV to become EMI in 1931. But in France and other countries, both HMV (Voix de son Maitre) and Columbia used lamination much later.

It's worth mentioning that some Muztrests are laminated.
