So - is this a genuine recording by Sobinov, or a pirate transcription?

I think Russia didn't follow most of the world in this policy, but the Gramophone Co would have wanted to sign Sobinov up for an exclusive contract - at least for for lateral discs.

In the UK the contract would often cover (lateral?) discs, leaving the artist free to record cylinders and possibly Pathe discs.
