A question to Alexey Gapontsev and all Pathe experts
Are you sure that the suffixes "BC", "RA" and "GR", etc. designate the takes ?

Maybe they are the initials of sound technicians, and in this case they are part of matrix numbers ?

These letters, if they are the same as appear larger on slightly later Pathe records, have a different meaning I think. If I'm right the information is in Girard and Barnes Vertical Cut Cylinders and Discs. I'll have a look tonight.

All Pathe discs stampers are pantographed from a master cylinder and the main number, 27601 here, is the master cylinder number, the only identifier of that performance. The smaller number, here 18247, is the stamper number. When a stamper wore out, a new wax would be pantographed from the cylinder, and would have a new stamper number.

The letters below or to the right were always C on the very earliest discs but "In about 1906, the "C" indication was discontinued and a series of new symbols made its appearance: R, RG, RA, ER etc. Their significance is not known".

Information, and quoted text at end, from Girard & Barnes, 'Vertical-Cut Cylinders and Discs'

I was thinking originally of the large numbers that often appear at the top, under the round title and artist 'frame'. These I think identified the musical copyright owner, though I see they are mainly absent from Russian pressings.

The book lists this side as recorded in 1909, but it is often very wrong with its dates.

Dear Adrian,

Thank you very much for valuable information! It looks like we have to move stamper numbers (together with their suffixes) from Matrix/Control number field into other field like "Additional Numbers" or "Additional information".

Happy to help!

I'm not sure if the master cylinder number always identifies a single 'take' at a single session. I think probably not.

I have a disk by Aumonier with the number 23 and this number was used for the same title at the very start of Pathe's issues in 1897, of course before they could be mass-produced by moulding or stamping, so there would be many different recordings issued.

The cylinder that was used to make the first moulded cylinders, or the disc stamper a few years later, would be one of the last ones, or more likely a new one on a master cylinder after that system started. But if and when master cylinders were ever replaced, there is no way to tell from the disc or cylinder as issued, as far as I know.

Additional numbers

I am agree with this idea. It appears from Adrian's information that stamper numbers of Pathe discs contain only technical data and cannot be used for record identification.

The only question I want to address to Yuri is whether I should move these numbers manually or it will be performed automatically for all Pathe discs?
