Judging by the appearance it is nothing else, but the original "Metropol-Record" label with new name printed over the original one! Thick silver background was necessary in order to completely hide the original name.
Quite so! It looks like we are “step-by-step” reconstructing the transformation of “Metropol”! The overprint is really much more thick and bright made than the main area of the label. It’s interesting, which RAOG label followed this “transitional” type – the “Golden” one or the “Silver” one? Or they coexisted?
(Translated from Russian)
Most likely they also overprinted the “Order number” that clearly has different font. It helped to avoid collisions with own RAOG numbers.
I think that “Transition” version followed by the “golden” one and here is why: please take a note that the “Golden” version and the original Metropol label are almost identical, but the “Silver” version made in different color palette, and the picture looks much poorer –shadows are disappeared, depicted fewer number of details, and etc. As a result, the girl’s face as well as the whole picture looks “flat”.
I imagine the following picture: after RAOG took ownership of the Metropol factory to RAOG, that later inherited not only old labels, but supply of paints that were used for printing original labels. After modifying the cliché the factory began to print own labels using old paints – that is why they are so much alike! However, it was the time of WWI, and apparently the deficit was not only imported shellac, but most likely imported paint! As soon as supply of inherited paint run out, they had to find domestic substitute – and whatever they were able to find they had to use! They also had urgently modifying the cliché once again – the old one was customized for certain set of paints, the new set would give an awfully looking picture. Beggars can't be choosers – hence the result.
Is anybody interested in English translation? I keep maintaining this thread in two languages, but may be no one is reading the English version? --Yuri
