This recording hs been submitted to supplement the entry with only the record label.
The recording location of Bucharest implied by the inscription on the label is extremely doubtful. All indications are that this quartet made its recordings in Warsaw and that the performers were native to Ukraine and/or Poland.
The classification of this as a dance (in the label entry) is in error. There are no traditional Ashkenazic dances using music in this 3/4 meter. This is almost certainly music for a non-dance wedding function, perhaps as a ’Dobridzhen’ or ’Mazltov’, more likely for the function called ’opshpiln (or opfirn) di mekhutonim’, a musical greeting (or procession) for the parents of the wedding couple. |
